Finding your watch
How does the Watch Finder work?
Your answers are compared with the specifications available in the catalog. A weighted compatibility score ranks the closest matches, with explanations of what matches and what differs.
Can I skip a preference?
Yes. Choose No Preference where available and skip optional questions. More specific preferences help narrow the recommendations.
Does a recommendation guarantee a perfect fit?
No. Wrist measurements help suggest proportions, but case shape, lug-to-lug distance, strap adjustment and personal taste also affect how a watch wears.
What if a specification is missing?
Missing information is not counted as a confirmed match. Review the listed product specifications before making your choice.

Where do you ship?
We ship within the United States from Massachusetts. Order preparation takes 1–2 business days, and delivery time depends on the destination and carrier service.
How much is shipping?
Standard shipping costs $9.99. Free shipping applies at a qualifying merchandise amount above $99, calculated after coupon discounts and before shipping and taxes. Review the final charge before placing your order.
Can I return a watch?
Request a return by email within 30 days after delivery. Change-of-mind returns must be unworn and undamaged; the customer pays return shipping. We cover reasonable necessary return shipping for defects or incorrect items. See Returns & Refunds for instructions.
What does the warranty cover?
Our two-year limited seller warranty covers manufacturing defects. Contact support@fifthgearwatches.com with your order number and a description of the issue. Normal wear and accidental damage are not manufacturing defects.
Do I need an account?
No. Guest checkout is enabled. An account lets you view order information and manage your saved details.
Exploring the collection
How do I select a color or variation?
On a product with options, choose the available variation before adding it to your bag. The displayed price, image and availability may change with your selection.
Where can I find dimensions and movement details?
Open the product page and check the listed specifications. Only details supplied for that product can be shown.
Which payment methods can I use?

Movements & functions
What is a watch movement?
The movement is the mechanism that keeps time and drives the hands or display. Traditional mechanical movements use a wound mainspring; quartz movements use an electronic circuit regulated by a quartz oscillator. Solar describes the power source, while GMT and chronograph describe functions. Check the specifications for the exact model.
What is the difference between automatic and manual-winding watches?
Both are mechanical watches powered by a mainspring rather than a battery. A manual-winding watch is wound through its crown. An automatic adds a rotor that winds the mainspring as you move your wrist. Many automatics also support hand-winding, but not all do; follow the movement manual.
How does a quartz watch work?
An electrical power source runs a circuit regulated by a vibrating quartz crystal. Conventional quartz watches use a replaceable battery; solar quartz watches use a rechargeable cell. Quartz generally offers greater timekeeping accuracy than traditional mechanical movements, but the stated tolerance depends on the caliber.
Why does an automatic watch stop when I do not wear it?
Its stored energy eventually runs out. Power reserve is the approximate running time after a full wind, without further winding. Wearing time, activity and the movement affect the charge. Restart and set the watch as directed in its manual; do not shake it forcefully or assume every automatic can be hand-wound.
How does a solar-powered watch work?
A solar cell converts light into electricity and stores energy in a rechargeable cell. Most solar watches use quartz timekeeping. Suitable models can charge from daylight or artificial light, although indoor light is usually much slower. They can keep running in darkness using stored energy; charging time and reserve vary by model.
Does a solar watch need a battery replacement?
It uses a rechargeable cell, so routine disposable-battery changes are normally unnecessary. The cell and other components can still need service over time. If the watch stops from low charge, follow its charging guide. Avoid hot dashboards, heaters or placing it close to a lamp, and do not fit an ordinary battery in place of the specified cell.
What does GMT mean on a watch?
GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time. A GMT function lets you track another time zone, commonly using an extra hand that makes one revolution every 24 hours and a matching 24-hour scale. Read local time with the main hands and the other zone with the GMT hand. The available adjustments and number of zones depend on the model.
What is the difference between caller and traveler GMT?
A caller GMT usually lets you adjust the 24-hour hand independently, useful for following another location from home. A traveler GMT usually lets you jump the local 12-hour hand independently, useful when changing time zones. These terms describe how the movement adjusts; confirm the caliber rather than relying on appearance.
What is a chronograph, and is it the same as a chronometer?
A chronograph adds a stopwatch function to measure elapsed time. Its central seconds hand may belong to the stopwatch while a small subdial shows running seconds. A chronometer refers to a watch tested against defined accuracy standards; it does not mean stopwatch. Extra subdials alone do not confirm either feature.
How do I set the date or wind my watch safely?
Use the instructions for the specific caliber. Many date mechanisms must not be quick-set while their calendar is changing, often around midnight; the restricted hours vary by movement. Never force a crown or pusher. If the instructions are missing, ask our team before adjusting the calendar or winding the watch.
Crystals & everyday care
Is sapphire different from a watch crystal?
Crystal is the general watchmaking term for the transparent cover over the dial. It can be made from synthetic sapphire, mineral glass or acrylic. So sapphire is a type of watch crystal, not the opposite of crystal. The quartz crystal inside a quartz movement is a separate component used for timekeeping.
How do sapphire, mineral glass and acrylic compare?
Sapphire is highly resistant to scratches, but it can still chip or break after an impact. Mineral glass offers a practical balance of cost, scratch resistance and impact resistance. Acrylic is lightweight and tends to scratch more easily; some light surface marks can be polished by a professional. No crystal is completely scratchproof or shatterproof.
Is sapphire-coated mineral glass the same as solid sapphire?
No. Sapphire-coated glass has a mineral-glass base with a surface coating; solid synthetic sapphire uses sapphire for the crystal itself. A coating does not make the materials identical. Look for the exact wording in the product specifications and ask if the construction is not stated.
What is an anti-reflective coating?
An anti-reflective, or AR, coating reduces reflections to make the dial easier to read. It may be applied to the inside, outside or both surfaces. An exterior coating can show wear even when the underlying sapphire is intact. The presence and placement of AR coating are model-specific.
Does a 100 m water-resistance rating mean I can dive to 100 m?
No. A depth marking is a pressure-test rating, not a blanket permission to use the watch at that depth. Suitable activities depend on the manufacturer instructions, seals and condition of the watch. Do not assume a diver-style watch is suitable for scuba diving. Avoid hot water and steam, and do not operate crowns or pushers underwater unless the manual explicitly permits it.
What does a screw-down crown do?
It threads into the case to help secure the crown and support the designed water resistance. Where fitted, it must be correctly closed before exposure to water. It does not make a watch permanently waterproof or suitable for every water activity. Unscrew it before adjusting, and refasten it gently without forcing or cross-threading.
Why does the lume fade, and how should I care for my watch?
Common luminous paint absorbs light and releases it gradually, so its glow fades with time; brightness and duration vary. For everyday care, wipe the watch with a soft cloth, avoid strong magnets, hard impacts and chemicals, and follow the model-specific cleaning instructions. Water resistance can decline as seals age; have it checked when appropriate, especially after opening the case.
This guide explains watchmaking terms in general. A feature described here is not a promise that every watch in our collection includes it. Always check the exact product specifications and movement instructions.
